Ballston Spa is often described as a strolling village due to its lovely, historic downtown filled with distinctive shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. In keeping with its welcoming, small town atmosphere, the village celebrated its special appeal in the summer of 2008 with “Ballston Rocks”. Over 100 painted Adirondack style rocking chairs were located throughout the village, decorated in different colors and themes by local artists, organizations, school children and individuals. The chairs are mostly intended as “usable” art. After browsing through antique stores, specialty shops and artist galleries, partaking in spa treatments or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the village’s several restaurants, visitors could sit a spell in one of the rockers and enjoy soaking up the local atmosphere amid the hanging flower baskets, parks and gardens. The “Ballston Rocks” theme also promoted the special events and activities that have become synonymous with Ballston Spa, including farmers markets, free outdoor concerts and films. Several rocking chairs were auctioned off to the public in September, but there are still some out around the village to enjoy.
