Ballston Spa 2018 Christmas Community Art Project

Merry Christmas, Ballston Spa! Local artist Mark Belch, the creator of last year’s Christmas tree ornament project and this year’s birdhouse competition has plans in the works for the 2018 Christmas season with another free community art project. The plan is to expand on last year’s very successful project, which had children and adults paint ornaments for the village Christmas tree. The theme for this year’s Christmas decorations is “A Village of Friends”.  The ornaments will be in the shape of gingerbread men and women. You can decorate them, with that theme in mind, with paint, fabric, gluing on things (just remember to use Elmer’s or permanent glue, not hot glue) or anything you want as long as it’s weather resistant (no tempera or watercolors paints).

Not only are we decorating the tree, but after the great response from the banners made for the birdhouse competition, Mark is organizing the creation of Christmas themed banners to be hung on lampposts throughout the village downtown. According to Mark, “I know it’s tough to face a blank canvas, wondering what you’re going to come up with. So this year we’ve done half the work for you. We’ve printed the banner with a Christmas candle for you fill in, in whatever colors or patterns you want. Just think of a huge coloring book. We have both one sided and 2 sided banners. And thanks to the generous donation by Curtis Lumber, we are also supplying paint to everyone who doesn’t have access to paint at their home. The elves have been working all summer to make this a project that everyone can participate in.”

If you want to participate in helping decorate the tree and/or paint a banner, all the elements can be obtained at the Ballston Spa Public Library, 21 Milton Avenue. When you’re done decorating, just return your banner and/or ornaments to the Library by the first week of November, so they can be sorted and organized before the tree goes up around Thanksgiving.  There is NO cost for participating. All that is asked is that all the banners and ornaments are “family friendly”.  Don’t wait too long, as there is a limited supply of ornaments and banners. If your children (or you) plan to participate, do go early to pick up the supplies. Contact Mark Blech directly if you have any questions. 518 742 6355

Please help us make this Christmas season full of Ballston Spa spirit and pride!

Would it be possible for me to get enough for my pre-k kids to decorate? I teach the UPK at the Saratoga YMCA. I have 40 students. There are lots of other pre-k kids too if you have more to spare…
